Step by step: How to clean a silk scarf
Have you purchased one of our wonderful printed silk scarves and would like to know how to clean and iron it? Although this material is somewhat delicate, the truth is that with care and affection, it will not be necessary to take it to a dry cleaner to wash it. However, if the garment is a silk scarf or a scarf with a lot of history, which has been passed down from generation to generation, it might be a good idea to leave it in professional hands.
How to clean silk scarves completely
If the scarf has a lot of wear and tear and we want to wash it so that it looks and smells like new, we recommend cleaning the silk scarf by hand. To do so, follow these steps:
-Fill a basin with cold water and dilute in it a little detergent for delicate garments.
-Be sure to remove the product well, so that it does not leave any stains on the silk scarf.
-Dip the handkerchief until it is completely soaked. Stir the handkerchief until it foams and the detergent is well absorbed by the handkerchief. Do not rub the handkerchief during this step, as this may cause deformation of the silk fibers.
-When rinsing silk handkerchiefs, the ideal is to empty the dirty water and rinse it with cold water until no foam comes out of the garment. But always with great care so that it does not deform. For it will have to take the handkerchief in a uniform way.
Tips for drying a silk scarf
Squeezing or wringing a silk scarf can mean the end of this unique and special piece of clothing. So from our online scarf store we recommend that once washed, you should hang it evenly, so that it is well evened out. Try to keep it level, and whenever possible, hang it horizontally.
Another important tip after knowing how to wash silk, is not to use clothespins to hang the silk garment on the clothesline, nor leave it in the sun. Clothespins can spoil its delicate fabric, while direct sunlight could dull the colors of the silk scarf.
How to iron silk scarves?
Once we have the silk scarf dry, or a little wet, it is time to iron it. Of course, with a lot of care and attention, as we have been doing so far.
Before ironing, make sure that both the iron and the ironing board are perfectly clean. To prevent the handkerchief from staining or burning, you can use a cotton garment, such as a sheet, and place it between the iron and the silk handkerchief.
Remember to iron the scarf on the back side, as it will make the colorful silk scarf last longer. If the silk scarf is damp, it will not be necessary to dampen the protective cloth, and if it is dry, we can dampen it. For this step, we will put the iron in the Silk program or delicate garments.
Now that you have your silk scarf well cleaned and ironed, it is time to store it out of direct sunlight.
If you follow all these steps, you will be able to enjoy a silk scarf for men or women for many, many years in perfect condition.
